Finally managed to solve the ‘gap’ in my book. For anyone with writer’s block am afraid I couldn’t say how. I followed all the advice I could find online. It was all good and sensible, some very logical steps that made perfect sense. In particular, the very generous and experienced - and seemingly inexhaustible - Chuck Wendig and his “25 Ways to Unstick a Story”.
I don’t get around to reading his blogs often these days but in the past his advice and insights have been invaluable. He is honest and inspiring, but don’t be fooled, his style is not cosy. His origins are in comic books. It doesn’t seem to matter. Sometimes it’s that faraway and unfamiliar voice that provides the needed boost. In the end a solution came and a lesson has been learned (lesson being it’s probably not a good idea to write in secret as you can’t leave out a plot whiteboard or pop to the laptop when inspiration comes). When it’s written I’ll come clean but am not putting a timescale on it this time. My 3-year plan went out the window, but at least nobody knew I had one. I’ll have to add a preface: ‘Set in 2015. Pre Brexit, pre Trump and pre COVID.’ Am never going to be ‘current’ I fear.
